Spring/Summer Activity and Meeting Announcement

Lauren Butler was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about a
year ago and is currently a student at the University of Massachusetts at
Dartmouth, and she will be graduating this May with a degree in Graphic Design.
For her senior degree project Lauren decided to do a piece on Celiac Disease—
something that personally affects her and all of us too. She has a questionnaire

Regarding celiac disease that it now posted on our web site to be completed

immediately as it is time sensitive. She would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Please go to:www.celiacsupportgroup.com

If you do not have a computer you can go to

your local library and complete the questionnaire there.  Lauren has agreed to

attend a future meeting to display and review her Celiac results.

Thank you for helping Lauren.

Meeting Agenda:

Presenters:

  • Dolores Braica, a nurse practionair specializing in diabetes will speak of the difference between type 1 and type 2 Diabetes, the Relationship of type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease, Auto Immune Diseases and Diabetic Prevention.  She has attended many of our meetings as her adult daughter is a member of our group.  We look forward to learning from Dolores’ presentation.
  • Marlene Zollo will be show casing her baking skills by making a Raisin Rice Pudding Recipe, along with making Dairy Free Lemon Cupcakes with Vegan Fluffy Butter cream Frosting.  .  Your help is needed.  Marlene needs to know how many of you are in need of dairy free, soy free or sugar free etc.  I know I am soy free and there is a member that is corn free, along with there are diabetic members too, so please contact us at least one week prior to the meeting to let us know if you need a specific ingredient change for you to enjoy the baked goods.  The reason for us to know is one: that we want you to enjoy our demos and two: you need to know that the group pays for these food demos and special ingredients costs us extra.  Of course everything is gluten free as that is our main need.  Please go to the web site for Marlene’s requested recipes from our last meeting.  Go under seasonal food list. We will have copies of her May 3rd presented recipes at the meeting not on the web site.
  • Denise Romano a celiac herself of Pocasset Bay Manor, 12 Old Pocasset Lane, Johnston, RI is having a Fund Raiser for a “Wish Come True”, for terminally ill children that will have Gluten free Deserts on  May 17th, from 2-4pm right at the Manor.  She will give us more details at our meeting.

Vendors: Many of the vendors will have samples and are selling their products at our meeting. All vendors will donate to our raffle table.

  • Kafe Lila is bring home made ice cream and we have donated ice cream cones to sample with the ice cream!  Yum!
  •  Purple Pear of Providence owners are trained at Johnson and Wales and make g/f pecan treats.
  •  Wicked Good Company is donating condiments for us to sample.  If you have access to enough carrot sticks for all to use when dipping into their sample let us know.  We appreciate all donations and we are in need of the carrot sticks.
  • Little Bay Baking Co is coming back by popular demand.  Their products are here in RI at many of our local health food stores.  Helen Sanders will give us more details at the meeting.
  • Kettle Cuisine Co is also back by popular demand.  We will be sampling their delicious soups that are available all over our state.
  •  Great Harvest Bread Co of 228 Atwood Ave., Cranston will be giving samples of his delicious gluten free bread.

And much more…………

Yes the meeting is packed full of gluten free food!!!  We are happy to have so many new gluten free foods for you to enjoy.  If you can help your support group we could use a few items donated.  We need: 120 plastic spoons, 120 plus small paper plates, napkins, coffee cups, coffee, tea, milk and carrot sticks.  Let us know if you can help out too as we always need help at the door, registration table, and kitchen, set up and clean up.  More hands make light work.

Raffle:  There will be two raffles occurring.  One raffle for gluten free food items including a donated shopping card or gift basket from Back to Basics.  The second separate raffle at $3 each ticket and will be for Carol Fensters, 1000 Gluten Free Recipes Cook Book.  This is a $35 value donated by Marlene Zollo.  The raffle table helps off set our meeting room charges, paper ware, coffee etc prices,  and food costs.

Have you seen the web site lately:  We have many new restaurants and lots of new NEWS too?  So, check it out.  If you do not have a computer go to your local library, senior center, or friends/families homes that have computers.  www.CeliacSupportGroup.com  We are proud of our web site and think you would love to see how many g/f friendly restaurants, stores and companies there are available to us here in RI/CT/MA. There are links to the Celiac Research Centers and links for Gluten friendly Restaurants when you travel this summer.

Cookie Cookbook offer:  The Gluten-Free Cookies cookbook by Jeanne Basye is a cookbook that we would recommend for all our members. I tried a few of them out and they were not only easy but delicious.  My personal recommendation is this is a great cookbook for us all to have as who does not like cookies!  I will have the cookbook for you to look over at the meeting. You can go to www.glutenfreecookielady.com to look over the book too.  If members would like to order it we can do a group order and save the shipping fee of $4.95.  Out total cost per book would be $19.95.  We would need to order in groups of 12 or 15.  You can let me know now or at the meeting if you would like to place an order.  .

May 16th:(Saturday) 2pm our Annual G/F May Breakfast at Alice Diner, 2663 South Main St., Fall River, MA.  Cost: what ever you order.  RSVP: to Millie at 826-0363
